2016-2017 NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
Madison Ewing, Class of 2017, has been named as a Semifinalist in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program. Semifinalists have an opportunity to continue in the National Merit Scholarship Program competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. About 90 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and about half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title.
The 2015 PSAT served as an initial screen to the 2017 National Merit Scholarship. Semifinalists are the highest scorers in each of the 50 states and represent less than one percent of each state’s high school seniors. Although Semifinalist qualifying scores vary from state to another, the scores of all Semifinalists are extremely high. By mid-February, Semifinalists will be notified of their status and Finalists will receive a Certificate of Merit.
We would also like to congratulate Rachael Ferraloro on being recognized as a Commended Student in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program. Commended Students are recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarships, Commended Students placed among the top five percent of students who entered the 2017 competition by taking the 2015 PSAT.
“Recognition of academically talented students and the key role played by schools in their development is essential to the pursuit of educational excellence in our nation,” commented a spokesperson for NMSC. “The young people named Commended Students & Semifinalists have demonstrated outstanding academic potential by their strong performance in this highly competitive program. We hope that this recognition will enhance their educational opportunities and that they will continue to diligently pursue their professional goals.”
Congratulations to Madison and Rachael on this outstanding recognition!
